RNZ: Poor state of NZ's courtrooms impacting victims - advocate

Black mould. Lights loose and dangling from the ceiling. An entire courtroom flooded.

Those are just some of the problems Rotorua criminal barrister Andy Hill says he has witnessed in local courtrooms that, nevertheless, have had to take on the extra weight of High Court work from Tauranga because it is in even worse shape.

"The court here is an absolute disgrace, quite frankly," Hill said.

Ministry of Justice papers released to RNZ say families, lawyers and court staff are being impacted by a host of poor and very poor buildings, especially in the upper North Island and among district courts.

NZ Herald: Te Atatū homicide: Name suppression lapses for Jaykob Tutai, accused of murdering Nazia Hai

Name suppression lapsed today for Jaykob Tutai, who is facing a murder charge following the death earlier this month of a young mother in West Auckland.

The 29-year-old Avondale resident appeared in the High Court at Auckland for the first time as defence lawyer Claire Robertson entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf.

Family of Nazia Shabrine Hai, 27, who police said died following a serious incident at a Te Atatū Peninsula home early on the morning of September 11, shouted obscenities at Tutai after he appeared in court.
