Calming the Emotional Storm
Helping People Develop Emotional Regulation Skills
with David Semp
Wednesday 16th September 2015
A re-presentation of a highly successful 2013 seminar, owing to repeated requests and a high level of interest. While this course will be of vital interest to counsellors, RTLBs, and other key professionals, it will also be relevant to teachers who are interested in helping children regulate their emotions.
This course will outline the basics of this approach, but there is a wide range of settings in which this approach could be applied i.e. any area in which the client/student is struggling to self-regulate their emotions. This approach is drawn from Dialectic Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Mindfulness. The key skills covered will include core mindfulness skills, distress tolerance skills, and emotional self-regulation skills.
This seminar will cover a theoretical background (acceptance vs. change), emotional regulation (theory, introducing it to clients, core skills), distress tolerance and emotional regulation, and common problems with the use of this approach. David Semp is a highly regarded clinical psychologist providing therapy, supervision, team consultations and training. (See www.mindfulpractice.co.nz)
