About us

Our role:

  • To develop/manage and promote projects that raise awareness in the community about the impact of family violence
  • To develop and implement best practice models in Waitakere regarding provision of Court services, information-sharing, network membership, collaborative practice
  • To support and facilitate collaborative projects that aim to reduce/prevent family violence
  • To provide a strong advocacy role for the prevention/reduction of family violence
  • To act as a conduit for provision of information from wider sources, to and from network members
  • To provide strategic advice and brokering of relationships to a number of organisations and projects within Waitakere City
  • To represent the domestic violence community on a number of committees

WAVES has a proven record of facilitating collaborative process for projects whose focus is prevention and reduction of family violence.
     

Services provided:

Our member agencies provide: 

  • Stopping Violence programs for men
  • Support and education programs for women and children
  • Advocacy and support for victims affected by violence, including Court proceedings
  • Programs for children who are victims of/witnesses of family violence
  • Training for organisations and professionals on domestic violence dynamics and prevention
  • Parenting programs for parents experiencing anger problems
  • Culturally appropriate services

Services provided from our office staff:

  • Advocates for promoting awareness of the impact of family violence on the community
  • Development and promotion of excellent practice in domestic violence prevention through provision of meetings, forums, information collaboration, member support, networking, newsletters, and promotion of best practice standards. 
  • Advocacy and support services through political lobbying, provision of a complaints procedure process, strategic advice for project and policy development, and a network of highly skilled and experienced professionals and  agencies in the filed of family violence prevention.
  • A conduit for information from various ministries and other sources to keep members and other community organizations up to date on the latest literature, strategies, projects, resources, findings and news in the field of family violence prevention and reduction  
  • A primary point of contact for organisations wishing to enter into community dialogue regarding collaborative projects relating to prevention or reduction of family violence
  • A legal structure to provide access to project funding and financial and HR support and management of collaborative projects.

Our aims & purposes:

  • To advocate for a culture of non-violence in Waitakere City.
  • To promote and provide a forum in which new ideas for eliminating violence can be nurtured and developed.
  • To promote/monitor the provision of a quality service to victims of family violence at Waitakere District Court.
  • To advocate for a strong funding base for family violence services in Waitakere City.
  • To maintain a central office from which to operate.
  • To effectively promote the role of the WAVES Trust and the services WAVES offers. 
  • Establish a clearly defined role in relation to other linked community initiatives.
  • Promote the profile, role, resources and membership of WAVES to the Waitakere
    community.

Strategy:

  • Strengthening and improving the responsiveness of the community network of family violence service providers.
  • Enhancing services through the provision of meetings, forums, training, and project development.
  • Provide community advocacy to enable a fair share of resources into Waitakere City.
  • Provide a vehicle for dissemination of information to local services.
