Ināia Tonu Nei and the National Iwi Chairs Forum Pou Tikanga are jointly convening a one-day wānanga to discuss whāngai and atawhai, and how these practices should be treated in the law. Supported by the Ministry of Justice, which is currently leading a reform of adoption laws, the wānanga will explore the impact of adoption laws on the practice of whāngai, what a future might look like where Māori are free to practice this tikanga without any legal barriers, and how to get there.

The actions agreed at this wānanga will determine how the Ministry of Justice addresses the legal status of whāngai in its reform of adoption laws.

This event can be attended in-person or online, select your location when you register.
