The Family and Whānau Violence Legislation Bill passed its first reading in Parliament with unanimous support, and was referred to the Justice and Electoral Committee. Submissions are now open on the legislation.

The bill amends the Domestic Violence Act, six other Acts and makes consequential changes to 30 other pieces of law. Find more information about the proposed changes in the previous NZFVC story Government introduces Bill to reform family violence laws.

Full text of the bill and details about submissions are available online. The deadline for submissions is 24 May 2017.

Justice Minister Amy Adams said "This Bill implements our Safer Sooner reforms announced in September 2016, aimed at breaking the cycle of family violence and reducing the harm it causes those who suffer this abhorrent form of abuse."
