Reports from the Office of the Children's Commissioner

December 13, 2019 at 3:29 PM

From the Office of the Children's Commissioner

The OCC have released two new reports which reports build on the insights shared in the What Makes a Good Life? main report.

What Makes a Good Life? Follow-up report: Views of children and young people in care on wellbeing

As a part of our engagement, we heard from 113 children and young people under the age of 18 who were in care and we compared their response to those not in care.

This follow-up report presents the four key themes we heard from these children in care through focus groups and interviews

  1. I want support for my whānau
  2. Oranga Tamariki has the potential to make things better, but sometimes makes things worse
  3. I want to feel loved and respected
  4. I want the basics

There was also a fifth finding based on the survey results

5. Across a range of wellbeing indicators, children and young people in non-whānau care generally fare worse than their peers.

Overall, we heard there are a number of things which need to happen to improve the wellbeing of children and young people in care.

What Makes a Good Life for Young Parents?

As a part of our engagement, we heard from 15 young people under the age of 18 who were themselves parents.

This summary report presents the key themes we heard from these young parents.

  1. We need to feel supported and valued to be good parents
  2. Education will secure our future and our children’s future
  3. We need to be financially secure and have our basic needs met
  4. We love our children and we want the best for them

We hope this document will inform policy and practice development for services to support young parents. This is the first of a series of summary reports from February 2019’s What Makes a Good Life? report. The next will be a summary of what we heard from Pacific children and young people.
