Kia whai whare tātou katoa: Regional, cross-sectoral homelessness plan for Auckland

August 24, 2018 at 11:03 AM

From Auckland Council

Kia ora koutou

Homelessness is a serious, and growing problem in Auckland.  There is ongoing concern about people who are rough sleeping and those living in very precarious housing like over-crowded or uninhabitable conditions, which can be less visible.  Homelessness is the result of structural factors such as demand outstripping housing supply, poverty and low income, as well as personal vulnerability factors such as experiences of family violence, mental health and addiction problems.  We know that many people are very vulnerable, and also that many working families now face homelessness.

In 2017 Auckland Council agreed that homelessness should be “rare, brief, and non-recurring”.  To achieve this vision, Auckland Council with government and non-government partners, is leading the development of a regional, cross-sectoral homelessness plan.  They recognise that this wicked problem can only be solved through alignment, coordination and collaboration among the multiple agencies involved.

Sector leaders came together at a workshop in May to develop the first draft of the high level, strategic plan.  The plan takes a systems view and focuses on population prevention, early intervention with those at risk, and intervention with those who are homeless.  This is an invitation to attend one of three regional workshops to progress this work.  The purpose of the workshop is to:

  • Present the draft plan for discussion and feedback
  • Progress development of the Roadmap for 2019, i.e. priority collaborative actions for the coming 12 months to implement the plan
  • Identify immediate opportunities to address homelessness in your locality

All of the workshops run from 9am – 12.30pm, on the dates set out below.  Morning tea will be provided.

Also, we want these workshops to be as inclusive as possible!  So we strongly encourage you to share this invitation with your networks and colleagues who are involved in work that can help to address homelessness.  As long as they let us know, we will be happy to include them in the calendar invite.

We very much look forward to seeing you at one of the workshops and working with you to progress this important mahi.
