Invitation to Pay Equity Meeting for NGO Sector
October 19, 2018 at 11:10 AM
Kia ora koutou katoa,
On behalf of Shakti, we would like to invite you to an NGO sector meeting to discuss a campaign around pay equity. This will be held on Tuesday the 23rd of October at 2pm, E Tū union office, 646 Great South Rd, Ellerslie.
As an organisation, we believe it’s time we get organised an NGO sector that services women, youth and children to organise for pay equity. We have seen the recent pay equity settlements and industry wage standards that have been achieved in the mental health support workers and addictions sector, as well as for government agencies such as Oranga Tamariki. This meeting will be a start to begin strategising on how we can achieve this for the NGO sector that provides critical service delivery on issues of gender-based violence. We all know this is a heavily feminised sector that has been doing specialised work that government agencies rely on. While government agencies have received pay increases in the social work and policing area, the small increase in funding for domestic violence services barely keeps up with the cost of living. The under-funding of our sector reflects the undervaluing of work associated with women and thus is pay equity issue.
In recent news, Anglican Women’s Trust for Women and Children and Barnados have spoken up about the impact the pay equity settlement for Oranga Tamariki social workers will have for the NGO sector. https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/social-agencies-may-forced-shut-their-doors-wage-gap-sees-workers-leave-government-jobs
We have put together a press release to support their position and urge other organisations to do the same, the more voices the better.
Please RSVP to confirm your attendance. If you would like to be part of this network moving forward but cannot attend the meeting, please let us know as well.
Ngā mihi nui,
Mengzhu
