Cases of murder in the family make frequent headlines. Yet data about commonalities in these cases and ideas for prevention are scattered across the literature. This presentation will describe characteristics of the various types of murder within the family. These include partner homicide, neonaticide (killing in the first day of life), infanticide, siblicide (killing a brother or sister), parricide (killing of a parent), and familicide (annihilation of the family)—and their common motives. Only through understanding these dynamics can we contemplate prevention.
